Ciena 6500. PACKET-OPTICAL PLATFORM MSPP OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE

Course Description:

This Blended-Learning Kit (BLK) is designed for personnel responsible for the
Operation, Administration, Maintenance, and Provisioning (OAM&P) of the 6500 MultiService
Provisioning Platform (MSPP) nodes and networks. Students are required to complete the Web-Based
Training (WBT) courses prior to the ILT/VILT portion of the kit. This kit includes:
•     WBT CN06 – ESD, Laser Safety, and Fiber Cleaning
•     WBT O505 – 6500 Product Overview
•     WBT O507 – 6500 Control Plane Overview
•     ILT O-241 – 6500 MSPP Operation and Maintenance OR
•     VILT X241 – 6500 MSPP Operation and Maintenance


Objectives:

Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:
•     Describe the products to be discussed
•     Provide an overview of the 6500 Family
•     Identify the common hardware of the 6500
•     Describe the features and functions of the 6500 hardware
•     Identify the various equipment and traffic protection schemes
•     Identify the various interfaces used for managing the 6500
•     Describe the features and functions of the Site Manager Graphical User Interface (GUI)
•     Identify the features and functions of OneControl
•     Describe key features of Ciena’s Product Documentation
•     Define Electrostatic Discharge (ESD)
•     Identify the precautions used to minimize risk of damage caused from ESD
•     Identify laser safety guidelines that must be applied when working on optical products
•     Identify the standard optical connector types and their differences
•     Identify the recommended inspection method for the different optical connector types that include
•     Identify recommended cleaning techniques
•     Describe the 6500 User Interface and Administration features and perform various activities with Site Manager
•     Describe the key parameters required in the initial nodal System Line-up  And Testing (SLAT)
process, as well as the Data Communication features of the 6500
•     Identify the MSPP hardware
•     Describe the electrical and optical signal flow in a 6500 shelf
•     Describe the 6500 Packet-Optical Platform (non-broadband applications) provisioning and
connection procedure, with specific activities to be performed by the students
•     Describe the Synchronization features available on the 6500 and perform various
synchronization activities
•     Describe the Protection Switching features available on the 6500 and perform various
protection switching activities
•     Define and provision a SONET/SDH Control Plane network
•     Describe the 6500 MSPP Performance Monitoring (PM) features
•     Retrieve PM data from a node
•     Clear alarms using Fault Management procedures


Conditions for Instructor-Led Training:

•     The maximum number of students for this course is 10.
•     Lectures take place in a classroom using projector presentations
•     Demonstrations and exercises will be conducted in the classroom and training lab.
•     Students receive course presentation material and product documentation on a USB drive.
•     If the ILT portion of this course is delivered outside a Ciena facility where captive lab equipment is not available, the lab equipment in a Ciena facility can be accessed remotely using a WebEx connection. Remote lab equipment access does have limitations with respect to the amount of tests and procedures that can be performed.
 


Prerequisites:

To be successful in this blended-learning kit, students should have a basic knowledge of:
•    Fiber optics and digital communications technology
•    Telecommunications systems
•    Experience with telecommunications systems
•    Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) and Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing (CWDM)
•    Synchronous Optical Network (SONET) / Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH)
•    Gigabit Ethernet (GbE), Fiber Connection (FICON), Enterprise System Connection (ESCON), and Fibre Channel
•    Optical Transport Network (OTN) infrastructure
•    Recommended: Ciena's Optical Communications − Associate (OC-A) Certification
Additionally, prior to attending the Instructor-led portion of this kit, students should have completed:
•     CN06 – ESD, Laser Safety, and Fiber Cleaning [duration: 30 minutes]
•     O505 – 6500 Product Overview [duration: 2 hours 30 minutes]
•     O507 – 6500 Control Plane Overview [duration: 1 hour 30 minutes]


Conditions for Prerequisite Web-based Training:

Interactive Web-based presentations are conducted on:
•     Personal Computer (PC) Windows XP or later
•     MAC OSX 10.6.x or later
•     Sound card with external speakers or headphones
•     Browser support:
•     PC: Microsoft Internal Explorer 8.x or later; Firefox 3.6.x or later; Google Chrome 10.x or later
•     MAC: Apple Safari 4.0.x or later
•     Students need to ensure that any pop-up blocker is disabled.
•     Macromedia Flash Player and/or Windows Media Player web browser plug- ins are required.
•     Reference documents are available on the Ciena portal.


Duration:

The average time to complete the training courses in this kit is approximately 4 hours
and 30 minutes for the Web-based components and 4 days for the instructor-led course.
